Senior Fasteners Engineer

Senior Fastener Engineer - Subject Matter Expert
Pay: $75-100/hour
Location: Remote
1st Shift, Part Time
Contract, Open-Ended

Position Overview:
As part of a small, passionate, and accomplished team of experts, you will be responsible for providing technical expertise and support with respect to mechanical fastening systems for space-bound vehicles. You will drive fastener and joint communization and standardization, substantiating test results for catalogue use-case entries, and assisting with the creation of fastener standards, safety factors, and installation procedures for application specific use of lab-tested fasteners.

As a Senior Fastener Engineer, you will translate engineering intent, drawings, and configurations into fully repeatable hardware test set-ups and data collections that will pave the way for fastener qualification, and flight worthiness. Throughout the fastener testing and qualification process, you will also identify, develop, and deploy methods to improve quality, reduce cost, and optimize the testing set-ups and sequences, and improve the integrity of test data collected and reported to minimize risk of in-flight failure. As an integral member of the fastener team, you will work to strengthen the feedback loop between design, development, procurement, build, and test departments and accelerate the pace of rocket assembly fuselage development and construction. This position will directly impact the history of space exploration and will require your dedicated commitment and detailed attention towards safe and repeatable human spaceflight.

Core Responsibilities:
* Provide guidance with fastener selection and procurement.
* Provide guidance for fastener testing programs through a combination of the work done by hands-on lab test engineers and acceptance testing procedures as well as data collection, analysis, and reporting.
* Translate engineering intent, drawings, and configurations into repeatable fastener test and installation methods by developing catalogue standards for joint-fastener relationships.
* Review existing and new fastener installation and fastener combination specifications to ensure all relevant and critical control parameters are captured in procedure.
* Assist in the development and ratification of Torque/Tension Test Plans and generate a testing matrix to cover all fastener combinations (17 nuts, 14 nutplates, 11 screws, 18 bolts, 8 inserts)
* Assist in the generation of safety or uncertainty factors as described in NASA-TM-106943.
* Analyze experimental data (i.e., torque-tension, torque angle, pre-load, clamp load, stall torque, rpm, dwell, reaction force, and time-based torque profile graphs) to determine joint, fastener, and assembly characteristics and author test reports based on project requirements.
* Identify, develop, and deploy new testing methods (or refine existing) to improve quality, reduce cost, and optimize test schedule, while maintaining data integrity.
* Interface with fastener test leadership and other stakeholders as results and reports are tabulated.

Required Skills & Qualifications:
* Bachelor of Science in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Aerospace, Electrical, or Engineering (other relevant fields may apply) from an accredited university
* 10+ years of experience in manufacturing engineering / industrial setting
* Deep knowledge of fastener load testing set-ups using axial and radial force loading machines, strain-gauges, profile monitors, bolt length measurement.
* Fastener Test Lab experience developing Torque/Tension relationship measurements and data analytics.
* Fastened joint design review experience.
* Fastener test standards familiarity such as ASTM or IFI.
* Understanding of engineering fundamentals for mechanical design and manufacturing, drawing interrogation and translation to test control documents, GD&T.
* Basic machine shop and fixture design skills.
* Strong intuition and judgement when faced with ambiguity and the need to make high velocity decisions
* Strong written, personal, technical, and software skills (CAD, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook)
* Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident (green card) due to the nature of the work

Desired skills:
* Knowledge and experience using CREO and Windchill.
* Knowledge of Atlas-Copco fastener torque installation devices and controllers.
* Masters Degree in engineering preferred.
