Structural Analysis Engineer

Description:
• Research, plans, designs, verifies, validates and develops mechanical and/or electromechanical products and systems, such as metals, instruments, controls, plastics, robots, engines, machines and mechanical, resonance, hydraulic or heat transfer systems for production, transmission, measurement, and use of energy.
• Recommends various technology options or approaches for system, processes, facility or program improvements in terms of safety, performance, efficiency or costs.
• May be responsible for the transfer from R&D to manufacturing.
• The Rapid Prototyping Group seeks a mechanical, opto-mech or aerospace engineer with broad experience in design, fabrication, modeling and analysis (primarily structural and thermal), and testing.
• Experience with mechanisms, opto-mechanical systems, and airborne payloads is desired. Experience with environmental testing or knowledge of a wide variety of fabrication methods is a plus.
• The successful candidate will work in small teams on a variety of projects supporting the development, testing and fielding of rapid prototypes that may include field-testing, airborne testing, ground vehicle testing, or tech transfer activities.
• The position requires interacting with subject matter experts across the Laboratory to make technology and design decisions to meet a specific program's demonstration goals.
• Tasks may include coordinating multiple design and analysis efforts to include electronics, thermal, mechanical, and optical components.

Required Skills:
• SolidWorks, SolidWorks PDM
• Structural/thermal/aero analysis background (SolidWorks Simulation or NASTRAN/PATRAN)
• Extensive hands-on experience with design, fabrication, system integration, testing and troubleshooting
• Understanding of integration & testing, alignment & measurement, mounting and packaging of components/sensors, environmental ruggedization, actuation & mechanisms
• Experience developing and reviewing fabrication & assembly packaged
• Demonstrate strengths in communication and collaboration with Multi-disciplinary teams of experts
• Should have some project management skills

Preferred Skills:
• Experience coordination and executing system environmental or performance testing
• Experience with multiple fabrication techniques: traditional machining, additive
• Experience with the design and test of mechanisms, sensors, test sets, systems
• Experience with optical/mechanical system design; EO/IR systems
• Experience with system mounting/adjustment/actuation
• Experience integrating payloads onto aircraft (e.g. knowledge of applicable FAA regulations)
