Principal MEMS Engineer

PDS Tech is currently seeking a Principal MEMS Engineer for our client in Redmond, WA

Are you passionate about innovative technology, including 3D LiDAR?  Our client has an exciting opportunity for a Micro Electromechanical Systems (MEMS) Engineer as a lead and key member of our team.  As the Principal MEMS Engineer, you will lead development including concept exploration, design, analysis, testing, characterization, troubleshooting, and system integration for the MEMS team.  The ideal candidate is self-motivated, seeks continual on-the-job learning, collaborates well with a small team, and is willing to help team members as needed.  Expert knowledge of electro-magnetic, piezo-electric, and electrostatic actuation methods as well as MEMS material properties and fabrication and assembly processes is required.

  • Lead definition and validation of MEMS device requirements to meet program objectives
  • Complete detailed design and analysis of electro-magnetic, piezo-electric, and electrostatic drive MEMS devices used for sensing applications
  • Perform mathematical analysis and FEA simulations driving design decisions to meet product requirements
  • Direct experimentation to validate and improve models and qualify devices
  • Collaborate cross functionally to integrate MEMS with higher level optomechanical systems and electronic control systems
  • Own all aspects of MEMS system integration
  • Deliver qualification / verification test plans and results to ensure devices meets all functional, control and reliability requirements
  • Contribute to the MEMS technology roadmap including assessing competitive approaches, vetting new technology, and proposing strategic investments and partnerships
  • Develop assembly methods for MEMS devices and assist in the assembly process
  • Support failure analysis of MEMS devices to determine failure mode and corrective action to improve design related faults
  • Support design for reliability and reliability testing/validation
  • Support characterization testing and data analysis

Required Skills:
  • Excellent mechanical aptitude
  • Expert knowledge of MEMS physics, operation, design, validation, assembly procedures, failure analysis, and environmental test methods
  • Expert at creating and maintaining device and system models (Ansys, COMSOL or similar software) and matching model results with characterization results
  • Demonstrated ability to define and validate requirements for MEMS subcomponents and assemblies
  • Experience creating MEMS subsystem documentation, such as requirements flow-down, test plans, drawings, and validation reports
  • Broad technical understanding across multiple disciplines including mechanical and optical systems, hardware, software, controls, and reliability engineering
  • Hands on experience and willingness to learn new technologies
  • Working knowledge of 3D modeling tools. SOLIDWORKS preferred
  • Experience working in lab and cleanroom environments
  • Experience with standard lab equipment (spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes, signal generators, etc.) to validate performance


  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related field. Master’s or PhD preferred
  • Minimum of 15 years of experience in related technical field
  • Demonstrated experience in a technical lead role and mentorship experience
