L-3 IOS has an opportunity for an Opto-Mechanical Engineer to join our engineering organization. Mechanical Engineers at L-3 IOS are responsible for a wide range of assignments spanning design, analysis, and testing of opto-mechanical systems operating in extremely challenging environments. A Sr. Mechanical Engineer is expected to guide product development from the architectural phase through hardware verification, working on teams consisting of Designers, System Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Project Engineers, Program Managers and customer counterparts. Duties will include overseeing the development of 3D CAD models, performing detailed finite element analyses, and reviewing assembly and component level drawings. Duties may also include supporting hardware fabrication, integration and testing, as well delivering formal technical presentations and writing technical reports.
Major functions: • Develop detail designs that perform within the prescribed specifications using the policies and procedures outlined in the L3 IOS Quality Manual.
• Develop designs consisting of opto-mechanical mounts, precision mechanisms (linear drives, fast steering mirrors, rotary gimbals, etc), and light-weight support structures for service in harsh environments for military applications.
• Characterize system and component level hardware performance (e.g., perform structural integrity, stability, dynamic, and thermal analyses) to ensure design compliance.
• Develop and maintain, or contribute to hardware Technical Performance Metric (TPM) budgets, including mass, wave front error (WFE), torque, power, and jitter.
• Specify hardware materials ranging from various steels and aluminums, to invar and composites.
• Employ DFMA techniques and select appropriate fabrication methods (weldments, casting, etc.) in an effort to minimize production costs.
• Execute tasks within the schedule and budgets established on the program.
• Act as liaison between departments, groups, vendors, and/or customers, providing input and feedback, and obtaining information pertinent to the task(s) assigned.
• Identify and communicate technical and programmatic risks to the project leadership.
• Provide input and recommendations to the Project Engineer(s) on the status and progress of factors associated with the task(s) assignments.
• Execute timely resolution of administrative and technical issues as they develop.
• Lead and execute the analysis, development and construction of breadboards, prototypes and engineering models to address identified risks.
• Perform engineering activities associated with project execution, such as: document releases, systems integration and checkout, installation and customer training.
• Assist in defining product technology evolution.
• Assist in the development of proposals (i.e., write-up, conceptual design, cost estimates).
Technical/Functional skills: o Able to use a personal computer
o Able to support hardware test/integration activities
o Willing and able to travel – domestic and foreign



o Design and analysis of complex systems
o Hardware (build and/or test)
o Familiarity with the use of 3D CAD tools (i.e. Pro/E CREO)
o Knowledge of GD&T
o Experience performing detailed FE analyses (i.e. ANSYS and or NX Nastran)
o Good oral and written communication skills
Education/Experience/Licenses etc.: • Formal Education
o Bachelors of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering (minimum)
o Masters of Science Degree (preferred)

• Job Experience:
o Bachelors with 9 yrs progressive experience as an ME.
o Masters Degree with 7 years experience.
