Position Summary




The regional Senior Electrical Engineer* will assist with the development and implementation of World Class Manufacturing (WCM) projects, energy reduction, safety and electrical distribution and control within company's manufacturing facilities across the United States (US) and Canada. Through the application of engineering fundamentals and advanced design tools, this position will ensure that electrical systems are safe, efficient, capable, properly maintained and tested. This position will provide innovation and leadership in the implementation and support of focused improvement, capital projects and strategic initiatives related to electrical, automation & control and power distribution / electrical systems. The Senior Electrical Engineer* will be accountable for the execution of electrical replacement/upgrade/maintenance and energy management projects, supporting yield/availability improvements and training/mentoring of staff for multiple sites within North America. This position will also assist management to develop manufacturing business plans and determine new or innovative technologies to enhance our current systems.



Essential Functions

  • Reports directly to the Corporate Automation Group Manager and is a member of the Central Engineering Automation team.

  • Responsible for planning, evaluating, organizing and implementing all aspects of electrical system design including medium and low voltage power distribution, motor control, lighting, instrumentation, P&IDs and instrument selection.

  • Manages electrical projects, oversees and organizes all aspects of projects including scope, budget and schedule. Technically leads and/or executes engineering projects, including development of key suppliers.

  • Generates single line diagrams, riser diagrams, layouts, cable and conduit schedules, routing, distribution and motor control schemes, as well as I/O lists, inter-connection diagrams for power, control systems, lighting and grounding systems. Performs calculations for sizing of equipment, feeders, etc.

  • Gathers electrical data and related documents to create engineering studies, project proposals and detailed project cost estimates.

  • Travels to various sites to perform on-site electrical system assessments to document existing system configuration, equipment ratings, conductor lengths / ampacities, and overcurrent protective device information/settings. Identifies and develops corrective actions / project plans for deficiencies and electrical code violations.

  • Performs and/or evaluates power system studies including arc flash studies, short circuit coordination studies, and fault current studies. Performs arc flash audits and gap analysis, creates summary reports, and communicates findings to Plant and Automation Group Manager.

  • Serves as SME (Subject Matter Expert) and trainer to internal personnel on arc flash safety, assessments, audits, calculations and reduction methodologies.

  • Responsible for managing equipment and labor costs within the approved budget.

  • Planning and scheduling of projects and preparing capital expenditures.

  • Interacts with managers and supervisors at plant and corporate personnel to secure appropriate resources to plan and implement electrical projects.

  • Develops and maintains relationships with key suppliers for certain instrumentation, automation and electrical control systems.

  • Manages work flow and electrical related projects and provides weekly status reports to corporate and plant management.

  • Provides technical expertise, support and enhancement of electrical systems and implements required updates to avoid technical obsolescence.

  • Ensures company's standards of safety, quality and reliability are built into power distribution and control systems.

  • Assists plant maintenance teams with any difficult troubleshooting issues.

  • Analyzes operating problems, develops solutions and leads the implementation of corrective actions.

  • Develops and maintains standard operating procedures and work instructions.

  • Ensures full documentation of all projects and systems to WCM / Early Equipment Management (EEM) standards.

  • Champions the installation and maintenance/upkeep of electrical metering systems for energy management and reporting. Provides energy/cost saving calculations and support for energy reduction projects.

  • Creates and provides training for other electrical/automation engineers, operators and maintenance personnel.

  • Assures good housekeeping practices following 5S systems, enforces plant rules and safety regulations, and supports company's Policy Deployment (PoDe) and WCM initiatives.

  • Continuously evaluates workplace for safety concerns and ensures behavioral safety initiatives are performed to goal levels.


Minimum Knowledge and Skills Required


  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university or college.

  • Registered professional engineer must be able to obtain registration in AR, IA, KY, NC, NV, WA, WV, WY within 18 months if not presently registered.

  • Five (5) years of applied professional experience in electrical engineering and power distribution (up to 4160VAC.)

  • Thorough knowledge of National Electrical Code (NFPA-70), Canadian Electrical Code (CSA C22.1), Arc-Flash (NFPA-70E) code requirements and OSHA requirements in relation to arc flash, electrical distribution and safe working practices.

  • Working knowledge of NETA, NFPA, NEC, IEEE, and ANSI standards applicable to power systems electrical testing.

  • Flexible, open-minded team player with excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal and problem solving capabilities to work effectively in corporate, manufacturing and team environments.

  • Self-directed and able to provide leadership and innovation at all levels of the organization.

  • Proficient in AutoCAD/AutoCAD Electrical and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

  • Proficient in developing, maintain and updating project schedules in MS Project.


Preferred or Desired Qualifications


  • Proficiency in the use of SKM PowerTools, E-TAP and EasyPower

  • Proficient in AutoCAD Electrical and automated design tools.

  • Proficiency in Medium Voltage Motor Controls, Reduced Voltage Starters and VFDs.

  • Experience with Allen-Bradley and Modicon Programmable Logic Controllers.

  • Experience with Allen-Bradley PowerFlex series Variable Frequency Drives

  • Experience with Industrial Network design and components.


Fiscal Responsibilities


  • In conjunction with the Automation Group Manager and plant Engineering Managers, control expenses due to electrical, I&C, materials and labor to meet yearly budget.

  • Prepares capital expenditures and provides technical and budgetary input for the purpose of planning and scheduling projects.
