Job Description
Function: GENERAL FUNCTION:

This position is responsible for development of complex electrohydraulic, electromechanical, mechanical and electropneumatic components and systems that will become the new products of Moog, Inc. The incumbent independently evaluates, selects, and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria using judgment in making minor adaptations and modifications. Assignments have clear and specific objectives and require the investigation of a limited number of variables

NATURE AND SCOPE:

A variety of technical functions exist within the Design/Development Engineering Department. Typically reporting to the division's Chief Engineer are Associate Engineers, Development Engineers, Design and Project Engineers, Senior Design and Senior Project Engineers, Senior Staff Engineers, and Principal Engineers, as well as Engineering Managers, Section Heads or Group Leaders. The Development Engineer typically reports to an Engineering Manager, Section Head or Group Leader within the department. The incumbent receives instructions on specific assignment objectives, complex features, and possible solutions. Assistance is furnished on unusual problems and work is reviewed for application of sound professional judgment.

The Development Engineer will contribute to the analysis, conceptual design, development, and test of complex control hardware used on military, commercial and NASA vehicles and equipment. The products of Moog generally are unique for each customer. Therefore, most new applications require a special, tailored design, even though adaptation of existing designs always should be considered where appropriate. The Development Engineer will operate as part of a design/development team, which includes other Department engineers. The incumbent may coordinate the work of drafters, technicians, and others who assist in specific assignments.

In the early stages of a new program, the project team will consult with the customer, establish the problem statement, conceive of potential hardware solutions to the problem, often through extensive trade studies, and then create a successful technical proposal. This phase is critical in that it establishes the basis for future design, and for contract negotiations. Under the technical direction of

the team's lead Engineer, the Development Engineer will then contribute to the evolution of the conceptual design, technical project planning, detail design, and development testing.

To be considered for the position of Development Engineer, a candidate should have a minimum of an MS Degree, preferably in Mechanical, Aeronautical or Electrical Engineering. As an alternative, the candidate should have a BS Degree plus four years of experience in the development of mechanical devices or control systems. To fulfill the demands of design and development of new products the individual must show self-starting instincts, an aptitude for creative synthesis, and the ability to utilize and quickly learn advanced design and/or analysis techniques. A basic knowledge of closed-loop control systems, mechanical hardware design, and good communication skills are also desirable.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

1. Validate conceptual problem solutions by performing trade studies and analyses.

2. Contribute to the preparation of successful proposal designs, cost estimates, and technical write-ups and reports.

3. Operate as a contributing member in a team of creative, independent individuals.

4. Represent Moog in a manner consistent with its technical reputation.

5. Create reliable designs through a comprehensive experimental development test program.
