Lead Systems Engineer

Description:
Major purpose:
Plans, conducts and directs engineering research, design and development projects of major significance, which are highly difficult and complex in nature necessitating the expert application of advanced engineering knowledge and experience. Originates and applies new and unique engineering methods and procedures; designs and develops special equipment; supplies technical guidance and counsel to other professionals. Generally operates with wide latitude for unreviewed action or decision. May represent the company in outside discussions and technical forums. Must be able to perform the essential duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation. The duties and responsibilities may change from time to time without notice and include but are not limited to the duties described below.
Major functions: Conceives, plans, and conducts research in problem areas of considerable scope and
complexity. Collaborates in preliminary and advanced design studies and prepares
technical portion of proposals. Serves as the technical specialist for the organization in
the application of advanced theories, concepts, principles, and processes for an assigned
area of responsibility. Plans and leads the overall approach to be used to accomplish design requirements, maintaining a system viewpoint from conception of product through development and testing to implementation. Keeps abreast of new scientific methods and developments affecting the organization for the purpose of recommending changes in emphasis of programs or new programs warranted by such developments. Evaluates vendor capabilities to provide required products or services. Writes major portion of complex specifications and engineering reports as a result of advance studies, special engineering investigations and similar activities. Performs various administrative and supervisory functions as technical, software team lead.

Education:
Master's Degree in CS, MIS, or equivalent technical discipline. Fifteen (15) years' experience in the analysis, evaluation, design and development of software and systems.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Work requires a broad knowledge of precedents in specialty area and a good working knowledge of principles and practice of related specialties. Excellent analytical skills required. Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills are required for effective interface with all internal and external contacts. Excellent software development skills are required. Must have ability to work in a fast paced environment with strong attention to detail. Must have a demonstrated ability to deliver to requirements and specifications and as individual, team lead and coach. Software and system architecture design and development in a turn-key system required. Technical skills such as OO, C++, and Linux/UNIX are required. Strong configuration management and process development skills are required. Exposure to UML, ISO 9000, and CMMI are expected.
