Aerospace Technical Writer

Testing and Troubleshooting Writer

Location: Shelton, CT OR West Lafayette, IN OR Huntsville, AL

12+ month contract

Butler Aerospace & Defense is seeking an experienced technical writer to work in our writing group authoring the troubleshooting section of maintenance manuals. This position is in support of contracted technical manual revision services and the creation of new publications. The writer’s duties would include researching, documenting, and authoring detailed testing and troubleshooting procedures to the governing specification. The writer will be required to interface with engineers on occasion over the content and review of the publications.

Technical Skills:

Experience with writing maintenance procedures from engineering documentation in the aerospace industry.
Familiar with the operation and maintenance of aircraft systems.
Able to read and interpret assembly/installation blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams, technical manuals, military specifications, vendor data, and various forms of engineering data.
Possess strong analytical/editorial skills. Be able to review incorporated technical data and provide feedback.
Proficient with desktop publishing using content management software.
Experience with SGML/XML structured document authoring such as EpicEditor or equivalent.
Strong computer skills with a working knowledge of Adobe Acrobat and Microsoft Office.
Preferred, but not required:
Rotary aircraft experience
Avionics technician, or equivalent military experience in aircraft maintenance
Familiar with the use of aircraft technical manuals and related technical data
Experience with Content@ content management software and XyVision publishing software
Experience with specification S1000D

Manage multiple jobs with tight deadlines in fast-paced environment
Strong, customer-focused work ethic and positive attitude

Work Experience:

5 years technical writing experience

Areas of Responsibility:

Research, writing, and development of portions of aircraft maintenance manual revisions according to the governing specification and published standard work
Develop concise, complete, technically accurate, and easy to understand technical information in a timely fashion with a very high level of quality
Conduct technical reviews of other writers’ work. Reviews and analyzes the technical information/documents that are incorporated into technical manuals
Provide frequent status
Meet internal and external delivery milestones


4 year college degree
