Mechanical Drafter (Piping Design)

PDS Tech, Inc. is seeking a Mechanical Drafter (Piping Design) in Luling, LA

The Project Mechanical Drafter is a critical role in the Engineering and Construction Team and a core part of the team’s success.  This position will be responsible for working with the Site Engineering and Construction Team to support Engineering, Project Controls and Construction across the Luling site in the execution of capital and expense projects. 

The focus of this position will be performing all aspects for complete designs of mechanical assignments using theoretical knowledge and practical design methods across the Luling Site.
This role involves working on the project owner’s behalf to review, integrate, and make recommendations regarding mechanical designs to aid in keeping the project on track.

Additional responsibilities will include:
  • Routine and special project work that involves the retrieval, preparation, processing, manipulation and management of data.
  • The ability to adapt to frequent and rapid change, work in high pressure situations and to utilize skill and judgment to solve problems is required.

  • Experience with BOTH MicroStation and AutoCAD is a MUST as those are the software packages used for mechanical drafting on the Luling Site.

Job Duties: 

  • Familiarity with and utilizing the Engineering and Construction Department’s design and drafting standards.
  • Knowledge and application of piping materials and piping supports and restraints in accordance with the Site and client Standards.
  • Knowledge of manual valve sizing, use and application in accordance with the Site and client Standards.
  • Familiarity with project scope, specifications and design criteria upon assignment to a project task team.
  • Developing the design and drafting of moderately complex piping (process and utility) drawings given basic information such as P&ID’s, GA’s, piping specifications, equipment drawings, etc.
  • Performing field design work to ascertain current conditions, locate new systems, communicate with project personnel and assist in construction.
  • Preparing material take-offs (MTO) from piping drawings.
  • Drafting of P&ID’s and GA’s utilizing both MicroStation and AutoCAD
  • Design of piping limited specific equipment and inline instrumentation arrangements such as pump suctions and discharges, tanks, control valve stations, etc.
  • Familiarity with specifications and installation details of construction bulk materials and equipment.
  • Ability to create accurate mechanical/piping installation documents from the information found on vendor equipment drawings.
  • Knowledge and understanding of work flow/information flow between disciplines.
  • Knowledge and understanding of schedule constraints and information requirements for the production of all mechanical/piping deliverables.
  • Ability to accurately estimate completion of assigned tasks.
  • Flexibility analysis of piping systems.
  • Planning and managing your site design activities for optimum results. The ability to manage up to 20 different drafting projects in parallel is not uncommon.
  • Recognizing and communicating scope and design changes promptly.
  • On-site in field assistance during startup.
  • Train and support designated team members on mechanical drafting as needed.
  • Coordinate with Construction Lead to develop construction strategies / plans for constructability of projects as it pertains to removal and installation of mechanical equipment and piping systems.
  • Promote Site and Area’s safety initiatives (Empart, BBS, Unit Compliance, etc.).

  • Associate degree in Engineering Technology or Computer-Aided Drafting is preferred
  • 4+ years of relevant industrial experience in mechanical drafting and design within a chemical plant, refinery or other industry / service with similar mechanical design relevance
  • Proficiency with MS Office products
  • Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team
  • Knowledge and application of company business standards and good practices.
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
