Manufacturing Design Engineer

Description:
•    Lead Mfg. Engineer for Wings, Pylons, Winglets, Doors, Engine Inlets/ Nacelles, Flaps, Ailerons and Windshields - performed design reviews including structural and systems integration; created/ oversaw all build planning, router creation, Bills of Materials, tooling, and work instructions for assembly and installation
•    Defined machining methods, tooling, and cutter selection for CNC and manual machining of hard and soft metals, including aluminum and exotic metals such as 10-2-3 and 6-4 titanium, CRES steels, Inconel, Zr2, and many others
•    Took control of a Project that was severely disorganized, 30% over-budget, and six months behind schedule by successfully bringing in machines and developing the broaching process holding costs to less than 15% over-budget and less than 2 months past scheduled due date
•    Project Eng. on several large machined parts and assemblies to include all tool design, part programming, machining and assembly planning operation sheets, electronic Bills of Material, kitting, work flow, and task sheets for all major commercial and military customers including Boeing, Cessna, Hawker Beech, Lockheed Martin, Gulfstream, Learjet/ Bombardier, Canadair, and Airbus
•    Extensive knowledge of all methods of sheet metal forming to include hand, brake, hydro-form, hot forming, hot joggling, super plastic forming, and stretch forming
•    Knowledge of manufacturing carbon fiber composites including hand lay-up, trimming, drilling, assembly, and bonding
•    Extensive Program/ Project Management including vendor selection, plant floor scheduling, creating project files, GANTT charts, process flow charts, track job progress, assign resources, etc.
•    Thorough knowledge of chemical and physical processing of metallic and composite parts including heat treating, priming, painting, anodizing, NDT, etc., reduced amount of outside services required in the manufacturing processes to save time and money for the company
•    Member of several IPT’s (Integrated Product Teams) auditing suppliers to determine manufacturing and quality capabilities and developing vendors to better their processes and supply high quality assemblies for use at final assembly or installation
•    Mfg. Eng. Lead for implementation of new ERP system to define methods for Bills of Material, work instructions, routers, tooling orders, production planning, scheduling, and purchasing
•    Negotiate Long Term Agreements with customers and vendors
•    Lead Lean Six Sigma manufacturing initiatives
•    Identify and recommend new equipment purchases throughout the division to include lathes, CNC and manual mills, grinders, hand tools, etc.

Manufacturing Engineering/ Project Engineering / Project Management
•    Integral part of the Sales Team to garner new business and increase sales and profitability estimating and quoting for internal and external customers with ratios as high as a 65% win rate with a minimum of 10% profit margin
•    Primary technical focal for customers and vendors

Quality Assurance/ Quality Control
•    Develop business processes and procedures per AS9102 required for two Green Field Startups as applicable to the Manufacturing and Tooling Engineering Departments
•    Train Quality Assurance, shop floor, and engineers on proper inspection techniques for the aerospace industry
•    Reduced Nonconformances by 62.5% and $400k in 5 months implementing stringent process improvements, training for inexperienced operators, and clear work instructions

Management
•    Build and develop cross-functional teams to include developing team members’ personal and professional growth using mentoring, instruction, and other personal development tools (F.Y.I. book, etc.)
•    As the Mfg. Eng. Supervisor, lead a team of up to (21) Mfg. Eng.’s, Tool Designers, Tool Makers, and Metrologists
•    Developed a metrics based system for Personal Performance Appraisals ensuring metrics do not rely on personalities but rather on actual quality and content of work completed
•    Performed capacity and manpower assessments to increase or decrease head count across the entire organization using Lean Six Sigma tools
•    Conduct high-level reviews with senior management up to and including President and CEO with exemplary compliments on professionalism, candor, and command of the situation
•    Primary Manufacturing technical representative at CCB (Change Control Board) having final approval for technical changes and incorporation
•    Conduct one-on-one and team-to-team reviews
•    Informal leader performing peer-to-peer reviews with departmental and inter-departmental supervisors, managers, and senior managers to address personnel and personal issues
•    Lead departmental supervisory/ managerial Staff meetings
•    Constant development of leadership skills through on-line and classroom based learning, research, and mentoring
