Mechanical Design Engineer - Mechanisms

Description:
The Engineer will be designing mechanisms, rotor hubs, actuators, gear boxes, drive systems, etc. All of the design work will revolve around moving parts and mechanisms. This person must also have lead experience and be comfortable in a lead role.

Seeking an experienced design engineer to take ownership of structural analysis of several key components. This role requires the candidate to thrive in a high paced environment and will have an integral role in advancing the next generation of electrically powered vertical lift aircraft.

Roles and Responsibilities:
Define: Generate conceptual layouts for critical systems. This includes rotor blade retention components, mechanical control systems, electro-mechanical actuators, transmissions, and electric motors/shafting. Define key requirements and take ownership of them through the design life-cycle.
Do: The Mechanical Design Engineer will also take the lead designing a myriad of critical components and primary structure. Areas of focus include propeller systems and blade retention components, transmissions, gears, bearings, actuators, motors/shafts, and other critically important, dynamically loaded structural components. The work outputs will include the relevant design artifacts (specifications, interface drawings, layout drawings, datum files and CAD assemblies, tolerance stack-ups, detailed drawings, etc). The ideal candidate will be highly versed in 3D CAD (Dassault 3DExperience preferred) and will also be responsible for conducting sizing of the components he or she develops. This will require working knowledge of aerospace sizing methodologies and experience running finite element models. In addition, the role will require the mechanical design engineer to support development test efforts (both ground and flight testing).
Intrinsic: The role will require constant flexibility and a level of comfort working in a rapid-prototype environment. The projects and assignments will vary from week to week, so the candidate should ideally have robust experiences to draw from (e.g. aerospace development programs, Motorsport/Formula One) in order to operate effectively in this environment. The role will include interfacing with engineering management, our customers, certification authorities, operations, procurement, external suppliers, and fellow design engineers.

Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university in mechanical/aerospace engineering or a related discipline with at least 5 years of professional experience in aerospace or a related field (i.e. formula one); or master’s degree from an accredited university and at least 3 years of professional experience or equivalent experience/combined education.
• Excellent mechanical aptitude and analytical mindset with a track record of demonstrated success developing actual products in a development environment.
• Highly experienced in 3D CAD and model setup using 3DExperience (preferred), CATIA V5/V6, SolidWorks or similar and generating detailed drawings, which are in accordance with ASME Y14.5-2009 standards.
• Familiar with finite element analytical tools such as Hyper-Mesh pre-processors integrated with Optistruct or Nastran, ANSYS or similar.
• Deep knowledge of common aerospace materials and standard hardware selection is a must. Experience with light weight structures and composites is also highly advantageous.
• Experience designing critical structural components, which have been sized for static strength, stiffness, fatigue, or a combination thereof. Knowledge of kinematics is also desired.
• Experience supporting ground and flight testing of complex systems as well as running sub-scale proof of concept testing such as coupon programs or prototype test rigs.
• Versed in gear and bearing design as well as lubrication systems, and the design of common housing features such as lugs and bolted joints.
• Familiarity with component and sub-system FAA certification testing is a plus.
• Past experience as a design supervisor, or leading a team and/or mentoring others, formally or informally is an advantage.
