Technical Illustrator

Description:
Technical Illustrator (L3 – Senior)

Location: Shelton, CT



The Senior Technical Illustrator works within the Graphics department to create and revise graphics for technical publications. The Senior Technical Illustrator works in conjunction with the technical writing teams to create or revise illustrations, in accordance with graphic specifications. The illustrator receives source material from the writers in various forms that include, but are not limited to, referenced graphics, rough sketches, models, photographs, and engineering drawings. The illustrator is able to read and correctly interpret engineering drawings and models, and translate the source data into the necessary views and details in an illustration. The illustrator creates or revises illustrations according to direction provided on the source material in a timely manner to support delivery schedules. Such graphics include, but are not limited to, component assembly/installation, schematics, block diagrams, flow charts/trouble trees, and exploded views.

Develop technical illustrations from markups, engineering documentation, and other technical source material.
Develop technical illustrations in accordance with governing specifications.
Update and maintain different file formats for incorporation into multiple platforms.
Perform with minimal supervisory input/guidance.


Technical Skills, Knowledge and Abilities of the following software and graphics field



CAD 2D (Autotrol TI 14.1, Arbortext ISODraw, Corel DESIGNER)
CAD 3D (Right Hemisphere/SAP Visual Author)
Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop)
Experience with PLM or engineering workflows
Expert with graphic specifications, processes, and workflows for the various types of graphics to be created.
Expert with different file format specifications for incorporation into various platforms
Hot-spotting
Blueprint and engineer drawing reading
Demonstrated aircraft and/or mechanical aptitude and the ability to apply this knowledge to create accurate and complex technical illustrations.


Interpersonal and Communication Skills



Communication proficiency with written and verbal English and in-depth knowledge of engineering and other technical terminology
Professional communication proficiency to interact effectively with coworkers, supervisor, managers, and customers.
High level of complex problem solving and analytical skills
Ability to dissect complex and interdependent processes into discrete and detailed steps to enhance end-users ability to understand and follow the directions.
Ability to work collaboratively with others in a tight-knit team environment.

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopier/printers/fax machines.







The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.



While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and listen. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.

• This is a full-time Exempt position requiring a 40-hour work week.

• Occasional overtime and possible weekend work are also required to meet customers’ needs.

• Flex time for arrival at the office is between 5:00 am and 9:00 am, but the employee must be available during the “core” work hours of 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. This is a rigid and unique customer requirement that existed and was explained at the time of hire. Due to national security related needs, all work must be performed onsite in a double secured office.

No regular travel is expected for this position. Travel on rare occasion may be required to support validations.



Previous drafting, CAD/CAM experience
Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design, Visual Communications, Computer Graphics, Multimedia, or Illustration, and equivalent experience
Read and interpret graphics markups, engineering drawings and various forms of source data
5 - 6 years of technical illustration experience, preferably in the helicopter or aerospace industry
Some small project management skills and experience
Work authorization: No foreign nationals. Much of the work is indirectly working on U.S. government contracts.
Security clearance: None is required from the US government, however, the customer requires passing a more in-depth background check.
