RESPONSIBILITIES: Designs components or portions of systems and modifies existing designs to develop or improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations. Utilizes computer-aided design equipment and/or graphic tools such as, CAD, CAM or CATIA. Gathers information, makes studies, computes calculations, and prepares original rough layouts, sketches to present design proposal. Coordinates design criteria with engineering, manufacturing, tooling, material, and planning group such as ease of manufacture, availability of materials, and contractual specifications. Exclude classifications in which incumbents predominantly perform drafting assignments. Leveling Factors: Knowledge: Considerable Full knowledge of the job. Supervision Given and Received: Direct General supervision and instructions given for routine work and detailed instructions given for new activities or special assignments. Typical Duties and Tasks: Duties & tasks are varied but standardized. Performs some more advanced functions. Resolves routine questions and problems, and refers more complex questions to higher levels. Consequence of Errors: Errors may be detected and corrected but may cause moderate loss of time or customer/user dissatisfaction. Contacts: Contacts are typically with individuals within own department and occasionally with contacts outside own organization. Contacts involve obtaining or providing information or data requiring some explanation or interpretation.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: Associate's or other 2 year technical degree in related discipline and 1 year of related experience. Naval design experience is desirable. A candidate must have a thorough knowledge of accepted design/drafting methods and concepts, and be familiar with basic engineering and design principles relating to machinery design work. The candidate for this position should be proficient in the use of 2D and 3D drafting software tools such as AutoCAD, Inventor and/or Siemens NX and have familiarity with Naval Machinery design in one or more of the following technical areas, including structural closures, Capstans, elevators, winches, hoists, hydraulics, arresting gear or other heavy mechanical components. Candidates must have experience with 2D and 3D CAD, Electrical Wire way designs, equipment arrangement layouts and/or cable routing experience. Prior Aircraft Carrier Design experience is a plus.
