Manager, Aircraft Seats Engineering

Summary
The Seats Engineering Manager manages the mechanical and electrical design team and is responsible for developing new seat designs and works with Product Support to support sustaining seat products. Responsible for ensuring the technical design meets the customer, OEM, and regulatory requirements. Manages engineering resources to support multiple programs ensuring the engineering resources are skilled, trained and sufficient to support all program milestones. Responsible for the design quality, design meets DFM requirements, and design meets recurring cost budget. Works with the other technical managers (Stress, Certification, Flam, Technical Publications, Manufacturing Engineering) to ensure a comprehensive and efficient design, substantiation, validation, and verification process. Manages department budget, cost control and planning. Initiates and communicates a variety of personnel actions and application of organizational policies. Provides leadership, coaching, and mentoring to subordinate group.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

 Responsible for designing or redesigning products to introduce new product lines or satisfy current sales commitments utilizing available components, quality materials and economical production methods to meet established quality objectives.  Provides functional and technical guidance to all aspects of engineering.  Monitors design team performance and progress for all programs; coordinates activities; and resolves technical problems that would critically affect cost, schedule, and performance.  Translates contract requirements into work requirements; processes, and tasks. Details the program work scope establishing program hours/schedule.  Executes mechanical & electrical design per program work scope.  Reviews work in progress to ensure that specifications, design, certification support, and performance schedules are maintained.  Manages research and development resources to meet contractual and internal requirements, control program schedule and budget.
 Ensures application of best practices and identifies the need for enhanced processes, methods, and tools. Supports the DBT team.  Ultimate responsibility for design and drawing quality.  Supports development and definition of workscope, schedule and cost estimates for new quotation efforts (RFQ).  Evaluates performance of employees assigned to program team.  Evaluates engineering/certification progress of the program.  Analyzes and resolves technical problems, or assists workers in solving technical problems.  Initiates or suggests plan to improve engineers skill and performance.  Responsible for financial reporting as it relates to the function.  Provides Sales technical support.  Ensures design standards are followed and continuous improvement of design and processes.  Tracks and ensure budgets, on time delivery and quality metrics met.  Ensures training program and career path for employees.

Supervisory Responsibilities Manages 2-3 subordinate leads who supervise employees in the Engineering group. Is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of this team. May also directly supervise nonsupervisory employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Requirements Education and/or Experience: Position requires the completion of a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering, and typically a minimum of 10 years experience in an engineering classification and five years in seat aerospace design. Position requires previous experience in a “supervisory” level role.

Moderate travel within the U.S. and abroad may be required to support programs.

Reasoning Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
