Sr. Mechanical Design Engineer - Electromechanical Systems

***REMOTE TO START, BUT EVENTUALLY ONSITE***


Seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to take ownership of significant electromechanical systems. Qualified candidates will be responsible for overseeing, designing, developing, and analyzing sophisticated electromechanical components and assemblies for the aircraft. This role requires the candidate to thrive in a high paced environment and be comfortable with the design, development, and test life cycle of rapid aerospace R&D. This role will include interfacing with engineering management, certification authorities, operations, external suppliers, and fellow design engineers, so strong communication and inter-personal skills are required.


Roles and Responsibilities:
• Generate and evaluate conceptual layouts for critical electromechanical systems
o Includes rotary and linear actuators, motors, generators
• Define key system requirements and take ownership of them through the design life-cycle
o Collaborate on internal design standards and methodologies
• Design mechanical parts and assemblies
o Create CAD parts and assemblies, create drawings for manufacture, assembly instructions
• Perform initial sizing of parts and components
o Hand calculations, spreadsheets, initial FEA/FEM
• Review other mechanical designs and drawings
o Review for design intent, sizing, manufacturability, and GD&T
• Support developmental test efforts (ground and flight)
• Mentor other design engineers and analysts


Required Qualifications:
• Minimum of 8 years of professional industry experience
• BS, MS, or PhD in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or related field
• Extensive mechanical design aptitude and analytical mindset and a track record of electromechanical system design in weight critical applications
• Experience designing critical electromechanical components, which have been sized for strength, stiffness, fatigue, or a combination thereof
• Extensive understanding of mechanical design fundamentals and analysis methods for parts, assemblies, mechanisms, and joints
• Deep knowledge in metallic material selection, processing, and manufacturing in aerospace applications
• Highly experienced in 3D CAD and model setup using 3DExperience (preferred), CATIA V5/V6, SolidWorks or equivalent
• Highly skilled in generating detailed drawings, to ASME Y14.5-2009 standards
• Engineering leadership experience and mentoring other engineers
• Experience supporting ground and flight testing of complex systems


Desired Qualifications
• Extensive Experience with finite element analytical tools such as HyperMesh OptiStruct or Nastran, ANSYS or similar
• Experience in mechanism design and kinematics
• Experience with composite structures and applications
• Familiarity with component and sub-system FAA certification testing is a plus.
• Prior experience preparing certification plans and reports, and interacting directly with FAA specialists or Designees, is highly desirable
