Join our CAD & Tooling design team to work on various projects covering everything from large and small solar panels and arrays for a variety of space applications, to photolithography tooling used to fabricate the world’s most efficient space solar cells. You will directly contribute to development programs that will help shape our next-generation improvements in product, process and tooling design.

Responsibilities:
• Design solar panels, solar panel components, and associated support tooling in AutoCAD / Inventor Pro Suite.
• Design and update searchlight/gimbal systems and high intensity illumination products for solar cell and solar panel test in AutoCAD / Inventor Pro Suite.
• Work closely with Panel Product Engineers to translate customer schematics and specifications into manufacturing efficient panel layouts and detailed manufacturing drawings, including Bills of Materials (BOMs), detail views, wiring lists, schematics, and notes.
• Participate in round-table drawing reviews and CAD-check of drawings generated by others.
• Generate soft tooling files from AutoCAD model. Learn to generate and check photo-mask drawings.
• Work with Product and Process Engineers to identify and define the manufacturing support tooling necessary to safely build and test the hardware in conformance with customer requirements.
• Generate tooling procurement and assembly drawings and models using AutoCAD/Inventor Pro Suite.
• Work with Illuminations Systems Product Engineers to generate and update part & assembly documentation for procurement, manufacturing and assembly: generate 3D models, verify model tolerances, and manage models in VAULT.
• Apply GD&T principles to assure manufacturability for assemblies and to resolve procurement issues.
• Work with procurement team and suppliers to resolve tolerance, material selection, and process capability issues to proactively address cost & quality of parts for both Space Photovoltaic and Illuminations Product lines.
• Support proposal and design trade efforts by providing rapid assessment of potential layout options.
• Assess customer ICDs for manufacturability and provide feedback/improvement suggestions to enhance compliance and/or manufacturability.
• Participate in LEAN improvement initiatives from both manufacturing and engineering perspective.
• Continually advance ideas to streamline design/documentation and manufacturing processes by applying DFMAT principles to all generated and reviewed deliverable hardware & manufacturing/support tool designs.
• Use Finite Element Analysis to support new design development and Root Cause investigations.
• Use Inventor CFD tool to assess thermal and mechanical stress on deliverable hardware and to determine factors of safety for assembly/ground support tooling.
• Lead design trade studies, supplier capability assessments, and manufacturability improvement projects as needed based on project scope and resource availability.
• Assist Product Engineering in preparation of program SDRL documentation, including parts and material lists, mass analysis, magnetic moment analysis, and detailed design descriptions for review packages.
• Learn to perform radiation and power analyses, and to generate handling procedures & hardware test reports to backfill as needed during periods of high-volume activity.

Qualification:
• Flexible, able to support evening and weekend work on an as needed basis, and self-motivated.
• Adept at working in a fast-paced environment to complete scheduled milestones as planned.
• Proficient in 2D and 3D CAD modeling using AutoCAD/Inventor Pro Suite 11 (or higher), including:
o Use of block part libraries
o Generation of multilayer drawing packages, detailed assembly views, and schematics
o Familiarity with AutoDesk Vault
• Demonstrated working knowledge of basic GD&T principles
• Sound working knowledge of Finite Element Analysis techniques, preferably using Inventor Pro Suite Analysis (including definition of model, mesh, and boundary conditions and interpretation/presentation of results)
• Must be proficient in:
o reading/generating electrical schematics
o quickly generating AutoCAD/Inventor 2 and 3 D models using block part libraries
o use of multi-layer drawing structure
o generating assembly detail views
o use of GD&T principles for evaluating manufacturing tolerances and dimensional stack-ups
• Prior experience in
o PCB or other electronics packaging and wiring design
o Use of Autodesk VAULT
o Generating/running finite element analysis models for mechanical and/or thermal stress
o Designing tooling for precision manufacturing and / or large structure handling support
o Translating model information from 2D to 3D and vice versa, both within AutoCAD / Inventor Suite and from other CAD systems into AutoCAD/ Inventor
• Able to compile and present data using Excel and PowerPoint, and to generate/update procedural documentation using Word
• Strong foundation in mechanical engineering and/or material science are also key.
• Highly adaptable to meet changing priorities in support of manufacturing, engineering, and marketing needs.
• Good people skills; able to communicate effectively with diverse internal & external customers and colleagues.
• Continually looks for improvement opportunities for work habits/procedures.
• Willing to embrace change and learn new skill sets to optimize processes/procedures and address balancing workloads in a dynamic market environment.
• Able to lead trade studies or process improvement initiatives as needed per project scope/resource availability.
Preferred:
• Familiar with basic physics of solar cells, photolithographic processes, Aerospace materials and assembly techniques, PCBs and electronics, FEA and FMECA analysis techniques.
• Familiar with VBA, SQL, or Labview

Education and Experience:
• AutoCAD/Inventor Pro Suite Certification and 4+ years’ relevant experience.
• Bachelors’ degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Material Science or related field + at least 1 year of relevant real-world (non-school-related class or project) experience is preferred.
• Degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry.
o ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
