Safety Engineer - EHS Specialist


Location: Kalamazoo, Michigan


Experience working in a Chemical and Finished Product Manufacturing Environment. Role is responsible for Occupational Safety Compliance (Examples: Job Hazard Analysis, Machine Guarding, Electrical Safety, Lockout Program, and Lab Safety).

Primarily responsible for providing technical Safety Subject Matter Expertise to Pharmaceutical Kalamazoo business units by way of assessing safety risks to ensure a safe workplace, a high standard of compliance with MIOSHA regulations and Pharmaceutical Global Environmental Health and Safety requirements.

Experience in assessing risks, developing and implementing proactive strategies to eliminate incidents and process deviations as it relates to safety.

Provides expert technical support to Pharmaceutical business areas relative to High Hazard Industrial

Safety Compliance: 

  • Conducts routine safety inspections.

  • Evaluates capital projects to assure compliance with safety requirements These projects could be in manufacturing of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients, in Drug Product packaging & filling lines (Both Aseptic & Non- Aseptic), along with Maintenance, Utilities, and Warehouse environments.


• Enjoys working independently to identify safety risks and compliance opportunities and propose solutions.

• Evaluates existing and new processes/practices. Updates compliance program improvements, associated procedures and creates plans for implementation of improvements.

Education Requirements:

• Bachelor's Degree in Engineering, Chemistry or Occupational Safety & Health.

Required Qualifications

• At least 3years of experience in successfully implementing Safety programs in a manufacturing environment.

• Experience in assessing EHS risks, developing and implementing proactive strategies to minimize risks and process deviations.

• Successfully uses recognized analysis tools to perform risk assessments, investigations, program auditing that result in identifying improvements.

• Ability to manage projects, is process minded, and demonstrates the ability to build and execute action plans to ensure alignment in pursuit of organizational deliverable.

• Demonstrates initiative, leadership, has excellent organizational, planning, interpersonal and problem-solving skills.

• Excellent written and communication skills.

• Competency in MS Office.

• Demonstrated ability to successfully influence and engage with multiple levels of

the organization and the proven ability to lead cross functional teams is required.


• Working knowledge in the areas of Industrial Hygiene.

• Project Management Experience

• Experience implementing lean concepts.


• Must be able to perform field observations which could involve walking or

standing on uneven terrain, squatting, bending, twisting, turning, and reaching

above shoulder height and work in various climates from extreme cold to heat.

• Able to lift and carry minimum 25 lbs. occasionally

• Able to stand or walk for periods of 8 hours or more

• Sit for extended periods of time

• Able to meet deadlines, both internally and externally



Candidates are expected to be on call. The position at times will require working varying shifts

to support the needs of the EHS organization and the business
