Laboratory Technician 3

Description:
This job requires an in-depth technical knowledge of specialized techniques, methodologies and standards associated with the work assigned, generally acquired through post-high school studies in the related sciences or industrial arts, or the equivalent, plus a minimum of 4-5 years related work experience. For technicians working in the Chemistry laboratory, a Bachelor?s degree in Chemistry or an Associate degree or Apprentice graduate along with 4-5 or more years of experience in a Chemical laboratory testing environment is required. An incumbent typically utilizes highly sophisticated equipment and instrumentation to conduct tests/analyses that are nonstandard, priority or complex in nature. An incumbent is also responsible for carrying the work of less-experienced technicians through the more difficult stages and troubleshooting equipment/tooling problems. An incumbent works to a fairly standardized routine within general supervisory review. The nature of tasks ranges from being structured, allowing little to no deviation from techniques/instructions, to quite broad (procedure and standard development), allowing an incumbent latitude to experiment. Frequent contacts include professional and supervisory personnel within the Technical, Engineering, Overhaul and Construction divisions. Depending on the area assigned (Welding Engineering, Nondestructive Testing, Laboratory Services, etc.), an incumbent may perform any of the following or comparable duties: -Collects samples and performs laboratory tests and/or analyses (e.g. chemical and instrumental analyses, physical and analytical tests, quantitative and qualitative analyses) to determine the chemical or physical characteristics or composition of materials for purposes of quality control, material identification, product development, etc. -Assists engineering personnel in the development, testing and implementation of technical procedures, processes and equipment. From general guidelines and instructions provided by engineering personnel, performs requested tests/analyses, fabricates mock-ups, etc., to test hypotheses, qualify/refine procedures, and/or evaluate equipment and processes for production application. Generally handles the more complex, demanding assignments requiring the application of acquired skills and knowledge. -Records and assesses test results, and may write test reports describing procedures used and conclusions. Prepares related charts and graphs, as required. Provides feedback on observations, and makes recommendations for resolution of problems based on practical knowledge. May assist professionals in developing and revising test/analysis standards. -Installs, tests, repairs, calibrates and maintains equipment and various apparatus for conformance to established standards. Demonstrates and explains correct operation of equipment, modifies/develops instruments or devices, and participates in planning and testing modified equipment and instrumentation procedures. Provides technical assistance to production personnel during the implementation of new processes, procedures, etc. -Provides classroom and hands-on instruction, administers and grades exams, etc., under the direction of professional staff, to train and qualify personnel in special procedures and/or inspection techniques. May maintain records related to the particular training/qualification program, and initiate training/requalification of personnel as necessary. -Prepares/revises technical and administrative procedures and instructions governing specialized operations, such as inspection or analysis techniques and documentation requirements, under the guidance of professionals. Participates in departmental audits to ensure compliance with established procedures. -Functions in a lead capacity, providing technical guidance and training to new or less-experienced personnel, as necessary.

This technician position is in the Laboratory Services department, calibration and special testing section. A qualified candidate must have experience in calibration of equipment or mechanical, electrical, or mechatronic equipment assembly, trouble-shooting and/or repair. Specific experience/qualification in welding, strain gages, and/or mechanical and electrical test equipment is also desired.
