Tool Designer

Description:
Tool Designer
The Tool Designer performs standard tooling design assignments usually representing a significant portion of a larger project. The Tool Designer will utilize engineering techniques and tools to support production, solve manufacturing issues and make design recommendations.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Design tooling, jigs, fixtures and templates to support all aspects of production.
• Prepare appropriate documentation for assigned projects.
• Specify and order parts and materials as required to support assigned projects.
• Ensure successful completion of assigned projects within the budgeted time and cost constraints.
• Participate in defining engineering approaches, and in planning and scheduling work.
• Provide technical support to the shop floor and other departments as necessary to resolve production and/or tooling issues.
• Participate in engineering design reviews to identify tooling requirements early in the product design phase.
• Interface with engineering and shop personnel as required, and studies 3D models, product specifications, engineering blueprints, tool requests and shop data to determine the most cost effective solution for production issues.
• Apply standard engineering design principles, techniques and mathematics to develop tooling configurations and designs.
• Select and specify standard items such as hardware and materials to incorporate into tooling designs.
• Create preliminary sketches, CAD models, layouts and detail drawings of tooling with 3D solid modeling CAD programs.
• Conduct and/or participate in tooling project design reviews as required.
• Provide production floor, machine shop and assembly support for technical matters relating to tooling fabrication and use.
• Modify tool designs as needed based on input from manufacturing engineering, production floor supervision and end users to improve tool life and/or performance.
• Follow assigned projects to a successful conclusion to ensure usable tooling and customer satisfaction.

Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree from a four-year accredited university or 5 years of applicable experience working in a manufacturing environment or equivalent combination of education and experience
• 2 years of Tool Design in a manufacturing environment


Preferred Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in Engineering field from an accredited four-year college or university
• Knowledge of aerospace industry and related standards and codes 
• Experience working with Unigraphics
• Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
• Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
• An understanding of basic machine shop and fabrication shop practices including the limitations of standard equipment and processes
• Working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerance
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications
• Proficient in 3D solid modeling CAD programs Proficient in drafting and detailing skills
