Amazon to launch 3,236 satellites to provide broadband internet access -- Amazon is reportedly planning to launch thousands of satellites in low-Earth orbit to provide global broadband internet access. Known as Project Kuiper, the venture involves the construction, launch, and operations of a 3,236-satellite constellation in space, according to federal filings accessed by GeekWire. The filings were made by Kuiper Systems with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). According to an Amazon spokesperson, Project Kuiper is a new initiative to launch a constellation of low-Earth orbit satellites that will provide low-latency, high-speed broadband connectivity to unserved and underserved communities around the world. According to the GeekWire report, 784 satellites of the constellation will be operated at an altitude of 367 miles. The network will also include 1,296 at a height of 379 miles. The remaining 1,156 satellites will operate in 391-mile orbits. Several companies such as SpaceX, OneWeb, and Facebook are currently in the race to launch space-based global high-speed internet. SpaceX aims to operate a constellation of 4,425 satellites, while OneWeb’s network will include 650 interconnected satellites. Last year, the Elon Musk-owned company launched two prototypes for the Starlink project ...

Collins Aerospace to establish advanced electric power systems lab -- Collins Aerospace Systems has unveiled plans to establish an advanced electric power systems lab in Rockford, Illinois, to enhance its position in the electrification of aircraft. Known as The Grid, the $50M high-power, high-voltage lab will be used to design and test systems such as high-power generators for the next-generation of electric aircraft. The new 25,000 square-foot lab will support the creation of a 1MW motor, which would be ‘the aerospace industry’s most power dense and efficient’ propulsion motor, Collins noted. Collins plans to invest $150M into electric systems over the next three years. The amount includes the $50M investment in The Grid. The company already started work on the new lab and expects it to become fully operational by 2021. The recently unveiled United Technologies hybrid-electric flight demonstrator, Project 804, will be one of the first platforms to be supported by the lab. Project 804 seeks to re-engine and fly a regional turboprop aircraft powered by a 2MW-class hybrid-electric propulsion system. The project is developed by United Technologies’ advanced projects group, which combines the engineering expertise of Collins Aerospace, Pratt & Whitney, and UTC’s research center. As part of its contribution to Project 804, Collins will use The Grid to design and test a 1MW motor, motor controller, and battery system ...

Triumph Group awarded contract to support Boeing's MQ-25 unmanned tanker for the U.S. Navy -- Triumph Group has been awarded a contract by The Boeing Company to supply critical hydraulic system components for the MQ-25 unmanned aerial refueling program. Triumph Integrated Systems will provide components for the hydraulic systems used in the landing gear and the aircraft's arresting systems. Integrated Systems provides similar content on other Boeing defense aircraft. The MQ-25 is the U.S. Navy's first operational carrier-based unmanned aircraft and is designed to provide a much-needed refueling capability. The contract supports Boeing's engineering and manufacturing development program to provide four MQ-25 aircraft to the U.S. Navy for Initial Operational Capability by 2024.
